City state Singapore is going to launch a satellite based road pricing system to replace current gantry based system. It is reported by 2020, the new-generation system will be in place, and existing 70+ gantries will be dismantled. All vehicles will be required to install a on-board unit with built-in 4G communication module.

According to local transport authority, this new system is used not only  to ease traffic congestion, but also to facilitate coupon-less road-side parking and automatic charging of off-peak car usage. It will also push out real-time traffic information to all road users through the on-board unit. That means all the vehicles are monitored real-time, reckless driving, speeding, illegal parking will all be recorded, and car theft will be minimised. There will be no more market for vehicle trackers.
